Who each one suits
The CAPM suits you if you have not led projects yet: students, coordinators and team members who want the vocabulary and a PMI® credential while the experience builds. PMI asks for a secondary diploma (or GED or global equivalent), 23 hours of project management education and an age of at least 18 (CAPM ECO and PMI’s CAPM page, checked October 30, 2026). The detail is on CAPM requirements.
The PMP suits you once you have led projects: 24 to 60 months of experience within the past 10 years, depending on your education, plus 35 hours of project management training (PMI’s PMP page, checked October 30, 2026).
The two connect. An active CAPM fulfills the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement, per PMI’s PMP page. The PMP does not require a CAPM first, and the CAPM does not count as experience.

Shaded rows: the two columns differ.
One route from CAPM to PMP
Step 1
Earn the CAPM
Pass within your eligibility year; the steps are on how to apply for the CAPM.
Step 2
Keep it active
The training credit needs an active CAPM: 15 PDUs per 3-year cycle and the renewal fee (CCR Handbook, checked October 30, 2026). See CAPM renewal.
Step 3
Log the months
Lead projects until you reach the PMP experience line for your education. How to become a project manager covers the early steps.
Step 4
Apply for the PMP
Your active CAPM stands in for the 35 training hours. PMI also sells an optional CAPM® to PMP® Essentials Course: 15 hours, 15 PDUs, $119 member, $149 non-member (PMI store, checked October 30, 2026).
Choosing between them
Can I skip the CAPM and go straight to the PMP?
Yes, if you already meet the PMP experience requirement of 24 to 60 months, depending on education (PMI’s PMP page, checked October 30, 2026). Without it, the CAPM is the PMI project management credential open to you.
Does the CAPM count toward PMP experience?
No. It covers the 35 training hours only; the months of leading projects come from work (PMI’s PMP page, checked October 30, 2026).
Is the CAPM a smaller version of the PMP exam?
The outlines are organized differently. The CAPM has a business analysis domain at 27%; the PMP splits into People, Process and Business Environment (CAPM ECO and PMI’s PMP page, checked October 30, 2026).
Which one pays more?
The BLS does not split pay by certification. Its median for project management specialists was $102,320 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked October 30, 2026); more on CAPM salary.
