Short answer
PMI does not grade the CAPM’s difficulty and publishes no cut score. Its outline shows 150 questions in 3 hours, four domains that mix predictive, agile and business analysis content, and five item formats.

The ECO says approaches are not isolated to any particular domain and the mix may vary by form, so no domain is purely plan-based or purely agile.
You are not behind if the outline looks long on a first read. It covers plan-based, agile and business analysis work in one sitting, and breadth is the kind of problem a calendar solves.
What makes the questions demanding
- Scenarios
- Animation and comic-strip items are built around a situation, and multiple-choice items can be too. Knowing the term gets you to the options; choosing among them is the work.
- Mixed approaches
- Predictive, adaptive and business analysis content are not confined to one domain, so a fundamentals question can turn on an agile practice (CAPM ECO, checked October 30, 2026).
- Business analysis
- Business Analysis Frameworks carries 27% of the outline, the second-largest domain: elicitation, traceability, stakeholder communication and roadmaps. Start at requirements gathering and traceability.
- Format variety
- Drag-and-drop matching and hot spots sit beside multiple choice; online candidates get comic strips but no animations.
- The reference shelf
- The ECO lists seven references, the PMBOK® Guide 7th edition among them, and says each item is found in at least two. The 8th edition of the PMBOK Guide appeared in November 2025; the 2023 CAPM outline still lists the 7th.
- No number to aim at
- PMI publishes no cut score, so there is no safe margin to calculate. See what PMI says about scoring.
Signs you are ready
- You can sort a list into risks, issues, assumptions and constraints without notes (risks and issues).
- Given a project description, you can say whether a predictive, adaptive or hybrid approach fits and why (life cycles and portfolios).
- You can read a burndown chart and say what it shows about the sprint (iterations and backlog).
- Your weakest topic on the practice test has had a second round of study.
- You have finished a timed session on the mock exam without running out of clock.
